The People’s Mural of Columbus

“There is something about setting eyes on the people who hold you up instead of simply imagining them.”

Columbus poet and essayist, Hanif Abdurraqib, wrote the above quote in his seminal work, They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us (Two Dollar Radio).

The quote evokes being seen and understood, the power and joy of friendship, and giving reverence to those no longer with us. It is a powerful statement published in 2017 that has been made more powerful by continued police brutality, the rebellions of 2020, and a worldwide pandemic.
