People’s Mural of Columbus Impact

COLUMBUS, Ohio, November 23, 2021—Cbus Libraries, a grassroots initiative to champion libraries and the love of reading, hosted a joyous celebration of Columbus Black creatives in late August.

Highlights include a mural dedication and performances by award-winning authors, poets and musicians. Hanif Abdurraqib and artist Bryan Moss spoke eloquently about what the mural, celebration, forebearers and community mean to them. Additionally, families enjoyed creating art with Maroon Arts Group and tasting cool treats from Too Good Eats.

Community Impact

  • 10 Columbus literary creators of color performed and read
  • $1,500+ worth of books featuring authors and characters of color gifted
  • $600+ worth of gourmet popsicles by a local Black entrepreneur gifted
  • $13,000+ in local economic support

What’s Next?

  • Partnering with Bryan Moss and Beechcroft High School, Hanif Abdurraqib’s alma mater
  • Installing a little free library at the mural’s location
  • Creating and installing a storyboard for the mural
  • Producing tiles from children’s artwork created at the celebration
